One of the eighty grand affairs at the TD Halifax Jazz Festival, July 8-16, 2011.
Late Night at the Georgian Lounge* with
Barry Rombery deat. Krik MacDonald (TO)

Most drummers are prized for keeping a steady beat or proffering a killer drum solo. Barry Romberg is not prolific and popular for these reasons. He is deeply groovy and has jaw-dropping chops, but his personal style is more architectural, more like a producer on stage. He adds perfectly matched and colour-rich accents, encourages other musicians to dig into their groove with his own creative demonstrations and surprises all listeners with the paths he chooses or doesn’t. As Mark Miller from the Globe and Mail further explains, “Romberg plays in a brisk bustling, lickety-split manner, marshalling a lot of small, quick sounds with a sharp crack of a rim shot...He applies that style and all its textures to a heated post- fusion style of jazz, the sort that the Breckers, Bergs, and Sterns are doing down New York way.” Add featured performer, saxophonist Kirk MacDonald, and this will be one night for the books.
